Internships

Once you are accepted to the Penn in Washington Semester Program, you will meet individually with Deirdre Martinez, director of Penn in Washington, to develop a strategy for your internship application process. Throughout the months leading up to your internship, you will receive personalized application guidance from Dr. Martinez and members of our alumni network in DC.

The deadline to apply for the Penn in Washington Semester Program is March 15th for the following academic year. Please note that both the fall and spring programs have the same deadline. The is to ensure that students who are interested in completing internships that require a security clearance during the Spring have time to submit their internship applications, which are often due over the summer. Students will be notified of their acceptance to the program by the beginning of advanced registration for Fall courses.

The exact timing of the internship search varies depending on the semester and also on where you are applying. The vast majority of internships don’t make their application available until around six weeks before the semester begins. For the Fall participants, this means that many applications will be due in July, and for Spring participants, applications will generally be due in October. The exception to this are the internship sponsors that require security clearance. For example, the deadline for the State Department is March 1st for fall semester and July 1st for spring semester.
