Database

College of Arts and Sciences students are welcome to explore the database, which includes over 1,000 internship sponsors in Washington, Philadelphia, New York, (search all 3 cities and multiple categories with Advanced Search) and all the State Capitals. Once you login, you'll see four tables on the left of the page. You can search by a number of different fields, but I suggest you start with a search by category. For example, if you are interested in international relations, you can look at internships in diplomacy or international development. If you are interested in children's issues, start your search by looking at the 'women and children' list. The database will be useful to you if you know you want to be in Washington but you have no idea what kind of organization you want to work for. It is also useful for students who are very clear about what they want to do in Washington and just need to know which organizations are in that particular field. (For either type of student, while the database will be very useful, I strongly recommend you arrange to meet with me to discuss your interests and help you narrow your search. At that meeting (you might want to bring a copy of your resume) I’ll take some basic information and then we can talk about what kinds of internships are appropriate based on your goals and interests. Please email d_martinez@sas.upenn.edu to schedule a time to meet.) Using the hyperlinks to each organization's internship page we've included for each database entry, you should look closely at what the organizations that interest you do to determine if that's a good fit for you. Once you narrow your list of potential sponsors (around ten applications should do it), it is up to you to prepare applications and send them. In those cases where we know someone in the organization who can help, we’ll discuss how those applications should proceed when we meet or you can follow up with me to find out. For more information, see blog entries to the right, or ask a question on the blog link. Finally, you may post comments for individual organizations (if you worked for them and had a great experience, for example, that would be useful for other students to know) or let us know when something is out of date or incorrect or miscategorized. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
